Course Introduction

A post-doctoral D.Litt. programme in Prakrit — Dedicated study of the ancient Prakrit languages — the mother tongue of Jain scriptures and one of India's oldest literary traditions.

Course Objectives

  • Master grammar, vocabulary and literary forms of Prakrit.
  • Read and interpret canonical Jain texts in the original Prakrit.
  • Study the historical and cultural context of Prakrit literature.
  • Develop translation and editorial expertise.
  • Produce substantial original research culminating in a published work of high academic merit.
  • Make distinguished, recognised contributions to the discipline.

Eligibility

Ph.D. in concerned subject with substantial published research and outstanding contribution to the discipline.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates can read, translate and critically analyse Prakrit literature and serve as expert resources for Jain studies institutions.
